Site Ready Skimming Course

This Level 2 qualification provides you with a range of plaster skimming skills and knowledge. You will also develop an understanding of the health and safety requirements and an understanding of the requirements for self-employment.

Duration - The course will take up to six weeks to complete and will include a final assessment to ensure candidates are ready to undertake skimming work on-site.

This qualification also supports progression to further learning at Level 3 and beyond.

Entry requirements

This course is not suited to those with no plastering experience. To apply for this course, applicants must already have developed skills with the use of plastering tools either
through previous work or training. 

Attendance

This is a full-time course.

Preparing learners to work on-site: CSCS Card

CSCS cards provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job they do on-site. 

If you do not already hold a CSCS Card we will support you through the application of gaining a trainee CSCS card. This will involve attending a one-day, Level 1 Health and Safety course, a health and safety touch screen test and applying for the trainee CSCS card.

We do not fund the CSCS card application, the cost for the test is £21.00 plus an additional £36.00 to obtain your CSCS card.

What does the course involve?

Below is an example overview of the course content:

Week 1

  • Introduction and welcome
  • Registration
  • Health and safety briefing (learners will be provided with a pair of protective glasses for the purpose of wearing during the whole of the course)
  • Thistle Finish Plaster mixing demonstration
  • Hawk and Trowel practice with wet material, and application to a small area
  • Introduction into the preparation required for re-skimming of walls
  • Practical sessions 

Week 2

  • Prepare the bay with scrim tape application and beading process of window walls
  • Skimming of flat straight walls
  • Introduction to the skimming of the window wall, reveals and hard internal angles
  • Introduction to different tools including speed skim/flexi trowel etc.
  • Practical sessions 

 

Week 3

  • Introduce skimming ceilings – note depending on the level of skills and ability this may be introduced earlier in the course for individuals who are able to progress at a different pace. 
  • Introduction to skimming around socket boxes/pipe boxing
  • Practical sessions 

 

Week 4

  • Add bulkhead to ceiling, splayed angle to the wall, column/peer
  • Practical sessions

Week 5

  • Introduction to the large area (2.7m x3m) wall
  • Practice Bay assessment
  • Practical sessions

Week 6 - Assessment eek

The assessment can be delivered during week 5 of the course if the tutor feels the skills and abilities developed are high enough to take the test.

 

All students will be supported on an individual basis and progress at different speeds on the course.

Qualification

On successful completion, you will achieve a Level 2 Certificate for Plaster Skimmer, accredited by NOCN.
