Green Skills Academy Celebrates its First Birthday

19 Jan 2024
In a world that's racing against time to combat climate change, young people, hold the key to a sustainable and green future.

Did you know that only 27% of young people know what a ‘green job’ is and even fewer understand the impact of securing a job in this sector can have on the environment? As the urgency to address climate change intensifies, the demand for skilled professionals in the green sector is skyrocketing. A recent study conducted by the Prince's Trust has sounded the alarm, revealing that most young people are unaware of the concept of net zero and the looming green skills crisis. That’s why we’re here to help you get a better understanding of the green skills landscape and why now is the perfect time for you to consider a career in this thriving sector.

Understanding Net Zero

The Prince's Trust research sheds light on a significant gap in awareness and understanding of net zero among young people. This knowledge gap is the first hurdle we need to overcome collectively. The report indicates that 72% of young people are unaware of the term 'net zero.'

Net Zero seems to be a buzzword when talking about climate change and national targets but what does it actually mean? Net zero refers to a state in which the greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere are balanced by removal out of the atmosphere. This means that a home, business, city or country should not produce any more harmful greenhouse gas emissions than it can remove from the atmosphere, once this is obtained, Net Zero will be achieved. From 2050, the UK is expected to reach its net zero target but the City of Greater Manchester is expected to reach net zero 12 years sooner, by 2038. The pressure is on, we need to act now. Manchester City Council has led by example and reduced its carbon emissions by 54.7% from the year 2010 to 2020, curious to find out how? Click here.

From renewable energy to sustainable agriculture, and environmental consulting to eco-friendly urban planning, the options are diverse and exciting.
