07 May 2020
If you’ve recently left school or college and you’re unsure of your next steps, the National Careers Service (NCS) can help you to upskill, make decisions about your future, and ultimately, find work.

Exploring different careers

When you access the NCS, you’ll be able to use digital careers tools to get you thinking about which areas of work interest you. There are over 800 job descriptions to explore, which outline the average pay for each role, the skills you need, what you’d be doing each day and how your career could develop.

You can browse through different industries, or search for a specific role if you’ve already got quite a clear idea of what you’d like to do.

Assessing your skills

Not only will your dedicated careers adviser help you to narrow down the line of work you’d like to go into, they can also look at your skills and identify any areas where you might benefit from training or a specific course to help you get your dream job.

There are also two skills assessments which you can complete online in your own time, which will help you to understand your strengths and get in insight into what motivates you.

Accessing courses and training

Your careers advisor can help you access fully funded learning and training opportunities to help you improve your skills and develop the knowledge you need to take your first step into your ideal career.
