Abiodun's Degree journey with GC

25 May 2021

Nigerian born Abiodun lives in Manchester with her husband and children. From a young age, she had always wished to gain qualifications in Business so that she could pursue her dream career.

After some research Abiodun chose to apply to the Growth Company for the Access to HE Diploma in Business. She chose to study at the Growth Company because of the high achievement rates, positive feedback from friends and because of the Manchester City Centre location.

After a year of studying, Abiodun successfully completed her Access to HE Diploma and knew that she wanted to continue with her studies so, she again successfully applied to the Growth Company for the BSc (Hons) Business Management Degree which is awarded by the University of Bolton.

Abiodun said: “Whilst studying for my degree I have faced many challenges, the biggest challenge has been the Covid-19 pandemic, however, I have received excellent support from the good, experienced Tutors. The Growth Company provided me and my peers with learning and support materials and my Tutors have given advice and supported us when making decisions about our next steps.”

Caroline Parker, Programme Leader said: “Abiodun has had an extremely busy couple of years whilst studying with us at the Growth Company, working at Manchester City Council as a Customer Service Advisor, running her own export business, and caring for her family. Returning to education as a mature student with English not her first language she has impressed her tutors by continually developing her written English skills whilst also learning new subjects. She has done all this with an inspirational determination and her tutors recognise her development and achievements, already achieving a 2:1 average for her first-year studies. Now nearly at the end of her first year, she has a 100% attendance record, even logging in from Nigeria so she didn’t miss an assessment, that’s commitment! Her ambitions are to grow her current small export business from the knowledge she gains on the degree.”

Abiodun added: “I would recommend the Growth Company to anyone who is wishing to return to study. My advice to those would be - The most important key to success is having the discipline to do what you know should be done, even when you don’t feel like doing it”.
