Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

This is a specialist sector providing installation, service maintenance and repair to temperature and air controlled  systems. As an apprentice, you will be working with qualified trades people whilst achieving your qualification and most companies will specialise in refrigeration, heating or air conditioning.

Who could you work for?

We have placed apprentices with Kool IT, Chill Co NW and Swift Heat.

What will you do?

Apprentices in these roles install, maintain and repair:

  • Air conditioning systems
  • Industrial fridges and cold storage units
  • Heating systems
Bricklaying

A bricklayer works outside all year round in all weathers, working on private and commercial properties. Working on your own or as part of a team, you will need to be able to read drawings and measure accurately.

What will you do?

A bricklaying apprentice could be involved in:

  • Laying bricks
  • Building inspection chambers
  • Laying draining pipes
  • Mixing cement
Carpentry, Joinery and Fitted Interiors

You will receive comprehensive training in a variety of skills such as manufacturing joinery and site carpentry or fitted interiors. The work in this industry is varied and you could find yourself working for a joinery manufacturing company, site carpentry firm or a company that specialises in fitted bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchens.

Who could you work for?

Past apprentices have worked at Manchester and Cheshire Construction, City Response Ltd and Wright Fit.

What will you do?

As an apprentice in this sector you could:

  • Install fitted furniture in bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchens
  • Assemble wall and floor units
  • Make and install wooden fixtures and fittings
  • Install and connect water supply plumbing
General Construction and Maintenance

As a general construction operative you will be helping and working with a range of qualified trades people. This is a hands-on job role where you will be working on a wide variety of different duties for construction companies, property developers, housing associations or estate agencies.

What will you do?

You could:

  • Refurbish and repair properties
  • Perform general building work
  • Move and handle heavy materials
Electrical

To work in electrical installation you’ll need a keen interest in technology, good analytical skills and be able to work using your own initiative.

There are a lot of progression opportunities within this industry with qualified apprentices working for specialist contractors or companies that install and maintain renewable energy technologies.

What will you do?

Electrical apprentices: 

  • Install and connect wiring system
  • Diagnose faults
  • Test electrical systems
Painting and Decorating

Painting and decorating is not all about hanging wallpaper! Working within this area you can play an important role in the painting and finishing of structural steel and concrete work used in bridges, factories, industrial and commercial buildings, as well as houses and apartments.

Who could you work for?

We work with many employers in this sector including Diamond Decorators and Bootmans of Swinton.

What will you do?

As a painting and decorating apprentice you may be required to:

  • Prepare surfaces for decoration
  • Apply paint systems by brush and roller
  • Hang wall coverings
  • Produce broken colour and basic stencilling
Plastering

If you want a job in construction, and you can work with your hands quickly and accurately, this job could be a good choice for you. As a plasterer, you apply different kinds of plaster to internal walls and ceilings so that they are ready for decorating.

Who could you work for?

Our apprentices have worked for a wide range of plastering companies such as D & L Plastering and Wright Rendering and Plastering.

What will you do?

A plastering apprentice would be involved in:

  • Dry lining, floating and skimming walls and ceiling
  • Skimming walls and ceilings
  • Applying renders to external walls
  • Decorative work such as ceiling roses and cornices
Plumbing and Gas

The domestic gas and plumbing industries are highly competitive fields that employ skilled crafts people and technicians. Within these industries there is good scope for progression and the possibility of specialising in a number of different areas.

Who could you work for?

We work with many employers including City Response, NWP and Flow-Right Plumbing and Gas.

What will you do?

You will be involved with the installation, service and repair of:

  • Boilers
  • Central heating systems and fires
  • Hot and cold water systems
  • Bathroom suites
Scaffolding and Roofing

If you are able to understand building plans, this job could suit you. As a roofer, your work could range from re-slating the roof on a house, to restoring the lead sheets on an old building. As a scaffolder, you would put up and take down scaffolding to allow other workers to reach the higher levels of buildings during construction, cleaning and renovation projects.

Who could you work for?

The Growth Company works with a number of scaffolding and roofing companies such as BB Scaffolrding Services, Network Scaffolding and Allied Scaffolding.

What will you do?

An apprentice in this sector would be required to:

  • Follow health and safety procedures
  • Erect and dismantle temporary structures
  • Remove or repair broken tiles or slates
  • Cut and fit lead flashings around chimney stacks and adjoining walls
Tiling Floor and Wall

As a tiler you would cover walls or floors with tiles, on jobs ranging from tiling a kitchen or bathroom, to fitting out a shop, hotel or restaurant. Some tilers also carry out specialist work, for instance on swimming pools and mosaic walls found in landscape gardening. If you've got good practical skills and can follow designs, this job could suit you well.
