This Pre-apprenticeship will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to carry out a range of activities associated with the job of a engineering operative. It covers the relevant health and safety requirements to ensure that all aspects of the operative role can be carried out safely.

What is a Pre-apprenticeship (also known as a Study Programmes)?
A pre-apprenticeship is a course designed for 16-18 year olds who want to progress onto an
apprenticeship but don’t feel quite ready. A Pre-apprenticeship will help you develop essential skills, gain industry-specific knowledge, and become more employable.

What does the course cover?

On this Level 2 Engineering course, will develop the knowledge and skills required to allow you to undertake a range of engineering activities to gain the qualification whilst all the training and assessments will be carried out to the minimum industry standard.

The course is made up of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and fabrication & welding.

Some examples of things you may be doing on the electrical engineering include:

  • Learn about safe isolation and lock off
  • Wiring radial circuits, ring main circuits, motor starters and lighting circuits
  • Stripping motors and testing
  • Fault finding
  • Using testing equipment
  • Using hand tools
  • Theory

Some examples of things you may be doing on the mechanical engineering include:

  • Mechanical fitting
  • Hand fitting
  • Using hand tools and power tools
  • Replacing parts in machines
  • Using lathes (accurate cutting machines)
  • Producing things like a hammer- once you have gained these skills you can make much more
  • Learn how to read drawing.

Some examples of the learning outcomes on the Fabrication & Welding include:

  • Preparing and using semiautomatic MIG, MAG and flux cored arc welding equipment
  • Grinding & metal fabrication
  • Welding

You will also cover:

  • Health & Safety
  • Communication Skills
  • Effective team working skills

How will you be assessed:

There will be continuous assessment throughout the programme which will include assignments for each unit and your practical skills will be assessed for the range of tasks being covered.

Will I receive an allowance?

You will receive an allowance of up to £25 per week. 

What will I achieve?

On successful completion, you will achieve a City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations.

What are the entry requirements?

You must have achieved a  GCSE grade 4 or above in maths and English.

 

How much does the course cost?

The course is FREE for anyone aged 16-18.
