Functional Skills qualifications are intended to support learners who wish to obtain their English and maths skills.

These qualifications will build your confidence and motivation, and the skills you gain will be valuable in the workplace or in any further learning.

Functional Skills Maths and English courses are FREE to individuals (including those who are employed on the day they start their programme of learning) who:

  • live in Greater Manchester
  • have lived in the UK for 3 years or more
  • are aged 19+
  • have not previously attained a GCSE grade A* to C or grade 4 to 9 in English and maths
  • do not hold a Functional Skills qualification above or at the level being applied for

What to expect in the session:

  • The enrolment session will take approximately 2 ½ hours.
  • You will complete an Initial Assessment and Diagnostics to determine the appropriate qualification level.
  • The session includes completing an online application and paperwork for funding.

What do the courses cover?

Functional Skills Maths Entry 3, Level 1 and 2

Topics covered include:

  • Use of number and the number system
  • Use of common measures, shape and space
  • Handling information and data
  • Solving mathematical problems and decision making

 

Functional Skills English Entry 3, Level 1 and 2

Functional English is split into the following areas: 

  • Speaking - Listening and Communicating - this will include extended narratives and information (information may be on technical, concrete, or abstract topics), discussions, detailed explanations and presentations, all at varying lengths.
  • Reading - This should include a range of straightforward and complex texts on a range of topics and of varying lengths that instruct, describe, explain, and persuade
  • Writing – Text: this will include straightforward and complex texts such as articles, narratives, explanations and reports of varying lengths. Spelling, punctuation and grammar and writing composition 
What will I achieve?

On successful completion, you will achieve a Functional Skills qualification.

Achieving a Functional Skills Maths and/or English qualification at Level 2 will demonstrate your ability and competence in numeracy and literacy and are considered equivalent to a GCSE C/4 or above.

Level 2 qualifications are accepted by some universities for entry on to a variety of degree programmes - please check the entry requirements for the university you wish to apply to.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no entry requirements for these courses.

Prior to enrolment, you will complete an assessment, and the outcome of the assessment will decide which level you will be enrolled on.

This course is fully funded, please check eligibility at the top of the page.

 

Where will I study?

The sessions are delivered online via MS Teams with 1-1 support also available.

Independent study is also required.

 

Will I need to sit an exam?

Yes, your exam can be taken on the 17th week, this can be taken online using the City and Guilds Invigilation System or you can come into one of our 8 centres throughout Greater Manchester.

How many hours per week will I need to attend?
  • You must attend a mandatory 2 hour class each week for the duration of the course, these will be delivered at set times and set days depending on when you enrol.
  • You will also be required to complete 2 hours of self-study each week.
  • Drop-in sessions for one-to-one support are available.
