Understanding Mental Health Together, This World Mental Health Day

Gain a better understanding of what it means to look after your mental health with GC

This Mental Health Day we’re taking the time to learn about mental health conditions, their impact, and the ways we can support each other. Having the knowledge and empathy is the first powerful step toward building a more compassionate society.

Mental health awareness goes far beyond simply knowing the terms “anxiety” or “depression.” It’s about recognising the diversity of mental health experiences and understanding that no two journeys are the same.

As Katie Harrydass, our Award in Mental Health Tutor explains:

“Mental health conditions often come with layers, there’s what you see on the surface, but there’s also what’s happening behind the mask. By understanding those layers, we can respond with empathy instead of judgement.”

Mental health touches every part of life: relationships, work, education, community and physical wellbeing. Awareness helps us to spot signs early in ourselves and others.

For Katie, the drive to educate others comes from personal experience.

“I first got involved through my family’s experiences. Becoming a Mental Health First Aider gave me the skills to support others, and since then, my passion has grown. Many learners tell me they finish the course with a new understanding of themselves, their loved ones, or the people they support.”

Awareness also begins with self-care. For Katie, that includes healthy living, connecting with family, volunteering, and finding moments to switch off.

“I try to exercise the techniques I teach. Looking after my own mental wellbeing allows me to support others more effectively. For anyone who wants to deepen their understanding, whether for personal growth, to support friends and family, or to develop professionally, we do offer fully funded Level 2 and Level 3 Mental Health Awareness qualifications in Greater Manchester."

These courses explore conditions, treatments and the lived experiences of people with mental health challenges, empowering learners to support themselves and others with confidence and compassion.
