Marta Gomes completed the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Business last year. She was then offered a place on the BSc (Hons) Business Management degree delivered by the Growth Company in partnership with the University of Bolton and is continuing to build on her skills.
We caught up with Marta to find out more about her experience on the Access to Higher Education programme and how she is finding her degree so far.
How did you find out about the Growth Company and the Access to Higher Education course?
I learned about the Growth Company through my former employer because they were offering the opportunity to complete an English and maths skills programme. I liked that the programmes delivered are flexible, allowing me to study around my working schedule, learn at my own pace, and benefit from 1 to 1 tutoring support.
For a while, I have been thinking about starting my own business, and I thought the access course would be an excellent opportunity to prepare me for the next step, which was to do a degree in Business Management.
How was your experience on the Access course?
The programme has exceeded my expectations. It has provided me with valuable experience, allowed me to learn new skills, and introduced me to a diverse network of people.
The highlight was the outstanding support I received from the tutors, who went above and beyond to help learners grow personally and professionally, empowering us to achieve the best results possible. The Growth Company has provided me with extensive support, which has been critical in managing my life, work and study and finding a balance between them. They have provided guidance and flexibility throughout the programme, which has been tremendously beneficial.
What did you do once you completed the programme?
After completing the programme, I applied to the Growth Company for a place on the BSc (Hons) Business Management which they deliver in partnership with The University of Bolton, I was delighted to be accepted on to the degree. I am pleased about this achievement, and most of all, I am grateful to the Growth Company for helping me to progress into the degree course.
How are you finding the the BSc (Hons) Business Management so far?
It’s been fantastic. I feel optimistic about the future, as this course offers a wide variety of career options. The skills learned in this degree are in demand, can be applied to a wide range of industries, and are valuable in large and small corporations.
Are there any skills you learned in the Access course that are helping you with your degree?
The Access to Higher Education in Business Studies helped me develop study techniques, time management, and research skills. Completing the Access course also gave me better understanding of academic writing, referencing, and research methods. It covers and emphasises critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, teamwork, and collaboration skills.

I highly recommend the Growth Company and the programme I completed and the degree programme to anyone looking to develop new skills, gain valuable experience, and achieve their career goals.
