Marcus Cordice has been a qualified joiner since 2018. He has worked for large construction companies as a joiner and repairs assistant and in a compliance role.
After being inspired by a documentary, Marcus enrolled on the Skills Bootcamp in Fundamentals of Renewable Energy to explore the job opportunities available in the ever-growing green sector.
We caught up with him to find out more about his experience on the programme and what he is planning to do next.
How did you find out about the growth Company?
I had noticed the Growth Company office in Stockport Town Centre. There was also a Growth Company minibus which would stop by the Hollywood Park estate to pick up students.
One day I asked the driver about the company when I was walking the dog and took the Growth Company number from the side of the minibus.
What interested you in the Skills Bootcamp in Green Technology?
I had been listening to the BBC World Service and listened to one of their programs called People Fixing the World.
This documentary focused on renewable energy and how countries in the global south were transitioning to green ways of creating electricity and power, saving the economy and people money, and creating new jobs in those countries.
I was interested in the opportunities in this sector and wanted to find out more about where my skills and experience could fit.
How did you find your experience on the Skills Bootcamp?
I found the Skills Bootcamp very enjoyable and a great way to learn more about the renewable energy sector. What I found most interesting was learning about the ways in which wind turbines are being used to collect energy from wind farms based on land and the difference in which wind is harvested on water.
I also learnt more about the opportunities open to me as it is a new rapidly growing industry with a lot of new career opportunities.
What are your plans for now that you’ve completed the Skills Bootcamp?
I had an interview with a National Careers Service careers advisor last week to discuss opportunities and we identified an opening as a Retrofit Compliance Officer. Having previously worked in facilities and compliance I feel a role like this would best suit me.
I have already completed my level 2 Retro Fit qualification with the Growth Company, and I think it would be a good idea to complete level 3, so I’m planning to do this as soon as possible.
Would you recommend the Growth Company?
I would recommend the Growth Company as a place that will open doors to a new career and give people looking to change careers an opportunity to do so.
If someone is looking to get into the renewable energy sector, the Growth Company’s Skills Bootcamp in Green Technology is a great way to gain experience and a qualification to open doors when applying for these new positions.
