On Tuesday 18th June, 2024 – GC Education and Skills, in collaboration with Rowlinson’s Construction, recently hosted an educational and interactive event for students from the Manchester Secondary Pupils Referral Unit (PRU), providing them with invaluable insights into the construction industry. The initiative was spearheaded by Lynn Caddy, Corporate Service Manager at Rowlinson’s, who collaborated with Kath Barratt, Assistant Head Teacher at the PRU and Lee Beveridge, Delivery Manager at our Trafford Park SkillCentre, to organise the event.
The students arrived at our SkillCentre in Trafford Park and were greeted with a comprehensive site tour and an informative session on the industry. Emphasising the importance of health and safety in construction, each student was issued a pair of work boots to keep.
A highlight of the day was the Bird Box activity, where students crafted bird boxes under the guidance of Edgar Tinoco, our new Joinery Tutor, and John Silke, our Multi-trade Tutor. The bird boxes were taken back to the PRU for decoration and eventual display either at home or around the school.
The day also included a complimentary lunch for the learners, which received high praise from the students for the quality of the food prepared by the canteen staff.
"The participants were really engaged and left with some great ideas for potential futures in construction," said Lee Beveridge, Delivery Manager.
This event marks a successful collaboration between GC Education and Skills, Rowlinson’s Construction, and the Manchester Secondary Pupils Referral Unit, showcasing the commitment to community engagement and education.
