Lauren Riding: Choosing a Real Career Over University

11 Feb 2026

Lauren Riding is proof that apprenticeships are not just a stepping stone, they’re a real, rewarding career path. After finishing college in summer 2024 with A-levels and a vocational qualification in Business, Lauren faced the big decision many young people do: university or apprenticeship?

For Lauren, the answer was clear. “I didn’t want to get into a load of student debt,” she explains. “I wanted to gain experience while I was young and start building my career straight away.” So, instead of applying to universities like many of her friends, Lauren applied for multiple different apprenticeship roles. Her determination paid off when she landed a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship with the Manufacturing Institute - the same day she received her A-level results.

Lauren’s experience has shattered the outdated stereotype that apprenticeships are “only for support roles with little responsibility. “From day one, I was told, ‘You’re not just an apprentice, you’re part of the team,’” she says. “I’ve never felt underestimated. I’m given real responsibility and communicate regularly with directors and managers. “I’m involved in a range of key tasks, from organising training logistics to managing communications with external partners.”

What’s more, Lauren appreciates the flexibility of her apprenticeship. “I cover my off-the-job learning hours, but I’m still fully involved in the business every day. It’s different from the idea of going to college one day a week - this is real work, real experience.”

Her apprenticeship has also helped her develop essential skills like communication, organisation, and adaptability - skills she knows are invaluable in today’s competitive job market. “I’m definitely more confident now, especially when speaking to people I didn’t know before. My communication skills have improved so much.”

She encourages others finishing college and are unsure of their next step to consider apprenticeships seriously. “If you’re torn between university and an apprenticeship, go for the apprenticeship. It’s a brilliant way to learn, earn, and build a career without the debt. I’m proof that apprenticeships open real doors.”

Lauren’s journey exemplifies the evolving world of apprenticeships - where young people like her aren’t just learners, but valued professionals shaping their futures.
