Karina’s Journey: Rediscovering Herself Through Carpentry and Joinery

07 May 2025

Karina began her learning journey at the Growth Company in October 2022, enrolling on a Level 2 in Carpentry and Joinery. What started as a visit to the Greater Manchester SkillCentre to explore opportunities for her son ended up opening a new door for Karina too.

“I came to the SkillCentre to look at courses for my son,” Karina explains. “While I was here, I saw adults learning, and it just sparked something in me. We’d just come out of the pandemic, and I really got a feel for the place. I felt inspired to explore learning again.”

Before starting the course, Karina had been a full-time mum and carer. Her son’s health needs meant she had to step away from her previous career in administration, and over time, she began to feel like she had lost her identity.

“When I started coming to the SkillCentre, I felt like Karina again.”

Karina completed her Level 2 course in 12 months and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Encouraged by her progress, she began contacting companies and applying for jobs. She eventually approached Liberty, a housing association near her home, who offered her an interview and suggested an apprenticeship route — something Karina hadn’t initially considered. She began her Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship in June 2023.

“I wanted to continue my studies with the Growth Company because I already knew the tutors. They had been so supportive throughout my course, and it’s such a friendly, welcoming place to learn.”

Now working in a predominantly male environment, Karina has embraced the challenge and earned the respect of her colleagues.

“You have to hold your own in construction, but over time I’ve built strong relationships. I’ve had so much support from my team and from ForHousing, who are great at encouraging women into the industry. I can do all the same jobs as the men – and it’s brilliant at home too because I can now take on lots more DIY tasks myself!”

At 47, Karina says she often gets asked why she chose to start an apprenticeship now.

“For me, it’s a fantastic way to learn a new trade. I feel more mature and capable of managing the apprenticeship. It’s honestly the best decision I’ve made – and the apprenticeship wage really helped with making it possible.”

Karina now encourages others to follow their interests, no matter their age or background.

“I’d definitely recommend apprenticeships to anyone of any age. If you’re a woman considering a career in construction, don’t be put off – just go for it.”
