How a Study Programme Helped George Launch His Career in Engineering

10 Apr 2025

When George joined the Growth Company’s Engineering Study Programme in September 2024, he had only just left school and wasn’t entirely sure what his future career would look like. Fast-forward to today, and not only has he found his passion – welding – but he’s also become the first in his group to secure a paid work placement in the industry.

George originally considered a career in photography. However, with close family members already working in skilled trades, he began exploring different options. After receiving better-than-expected GCSE results, George initially secured a place with another local provider, but after they failed to respond to his enquiries, George found out about the Growth Company through his school’s careers adviser. He looked online, liked what he saw, and applied.

The broad range of skills offered through the Engineering Study Programme caught George’s attention. He was particularly drawn to the chance to explore different areas of the engineering industry before choosing a specialism. “The course covers a broad spectrum of engineering, and the tutors are all great and supportive. I enjoy everything about it – the atmosphere is a really nice place to learn,” says George.

Currently attending the Greater Manchester SkillCentre in Trafford Park three days a week and on placement for two, George started on the electrical unit before moving into welding – and he hasn’t looked back since. Supported by his tutors, particularly Keith Hodgkinson and Paul Kennedy, he secured a placement at Salford Engineering, where he’s thriving.

Tutor Keith Hodgkinson says, “When I first met George on his first day, he fit in really well. From day one, he showed a genuine interest in welding. When he started the welding unit, he quickly got to grips with it – he’s now completed and passed all of his weld tests and the full unit. Since starting at Salford Engineering, I’ve seen a huge improvement in both his skills and confidence. He’s a natural, and I look forward to watching him grow and progress. I wouldn’t hesitate to employ George – he listens, works hard, and is a pleasure to teach.”

George is hoping to progress onto the Coded Welder Apprenticeship in May 2025. This apprenticeship route, which recently replaced the General Welder Apprenticeship, is in high demand, with around 6,000 vacancies nationally. It can open the door to specialist areas such as nuclear energy and metal fabrication.

George's placement is paid – a bonus he wasn't expecting – and a clear sign of the value he brings to his employer. “It’s a great way to find out if this is the right career route for me,” he says. “It also gives employers the chance to see what we can do before offering an apprenticeship.”

He regularly receives careers advice as part of the programme and is excited for what comes next – including progressing to Level 3 Metal Fabrication. “I’d 100% recommend the Study Programme. It’s a great route for people who aren’t sure what they want to do – especially if they’re open to a career in the trades. It’s definitely been the right fit for me.”

George also praises the support available at GC, including the free minibus service that makes his commute much easier – something he says sets the training provider apart from others.

From feeling unsure about his future to discovering a passion and a clear career path, George’s journey is a fantastic example of how Study Programmes can unlock potential and prepare learners for a successful future.

Watch this space – George is just getting started.
