From Setbacks to Success: Building a Future with Confidence

03 Jun 2025

After a tough few years at school - especially following the disruption caused by COVID - Callum struggled with attendance and found it difficult to stay motivated. Callum sat all his GCSEs and passed three subjects but unfortunately did not pass his maths or English.

“I always wanted to go into architecture,” Callum says. “But when my results came through, I didn’t know what to do next because I didn’t have my maths or English”

With the help of his mum, Callum applied for a construction course at a local college, hoping to take the first step into the industry he loved. But due to personal circumstances, Callum needed to start working to support himself and had to give up his college place, he started to work at Tesco.

When life started to settle again, Callum reached out to the college to try and return - but was told he couldn’t go back. But then, his grandad told him about the Growth Company. Callum looked online and decided to give the Tameside Skills Centre a call.

“I was invited in straight away. Everyone was lovely - it felt like a little home.”

Callum was offered a place on the Construction Multi-Trade course and completed assessments in maths and English. He was also introduced to additional opportunities like GCSE re-sits, the CSCS card and a range of enrichment activities to support learners both academically and personally.

Since joining, Callum has gone from strength to strength.

“Everything changed. I’ve grown so much in confidence and the staff are amazing. They really care.”

Callum now studies three days a week and works the other two days - not at a supermarket but working in accounts for a Droylsden based company. This new role came about through his local football team, where the manager offered him a position that’s now given him a fresh direction and real ambition for the future.

“I love it. I wake up excited to go into work. My plan now is to complete my GCSEs with the Growth Company and move onto an accountancy apprenticeship.”

In just a short space of time, Callum has turned his life around. With determination, a strong work ethic, and the right support from the Growth Company and his employer, he's not only found a path - he's paving it himself.

Just last week, Callum passed his driving test first time, and thanks to his hard work, he’s already managed to buy his first car. 🚗

Well done Callum!
