From nursery to new beginnings: Chelsea’s apprenticeship success

21 Aug 2025

Taking on a new qualification while raising a family and working full-time isn’t easy, but Chelsea was determined to make it work.

With a clear goal in mind and the right support behind her, she completed her Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprenticeship and opened up new opportunities for her future.

A new direction

Chelsea had already completed her Level 2 and 3 in childcare earlier in her career, but after taking a break from early years and working in a few different roles, she felt the pull back to education, but this time in a school setting.

She explained: “I wanted to get back into childcare, but not in a nursery. I wanted to work in a school, and I knew I needed my Level 3 to do that, but I also just wanted to give myself more opportunities.”

Overcoming challenges

As a parent with little support at home, her days started early, getting her children to school and nursery before heading to work. In the evenings, she completed coursework after bedtime routines, often working late into the night.

“Finding time to do my workbooks and Zoom meetings was a challenge. I also lost my nan during the course, and I had to juggle everything, including, family life, work, and study. It affected my mental health at times, but I kept going.”

Despite these challenges, Chelsea never gave up and her resilience paid off when she achieved a distinction in her apprenticeship.

Support made the difference

While completing her apprenticeship, Chelsea found the support from the Growth Company especially valuable.

“I received so much support from the Growth Company. If I was falling behind, they gave me extensions and never made me feel pressured. My tutor, Tony, was so understanding. I didn’t have time during work hours to study, so I had to do everything at home. But I always felt supported.”

Looking ahead

Chelsea has already secured a new position and is now planning her next steps.

Her time on the apprenticeship has also helped shape her future ambitions. “Working in a school has made me realise I want to go down the safeguarding route. I want to support children in that way, more than in the learning side.”

Chelsea’s message to anyone considering an apprenticeship is simple: “Just go and do it. I don’t regret it at all. No matter the challenges, getting that qualification has opened doors for me. You’re only going to better yourself.”
