This Level 2 Engineering study programme is designed to develop the knowledge and skills you need to undertake a wide range of engineering activities and achieve an industry-recognised qualification.

What is a Study Programmes?
A Study Programme is a course designed for 16-18 year olds who want to progress onto an apprenticeship but don’t feel quite ready. A Study Programme will help you develop essential skills, gain industry-specific knowledge, and become more employable.

1 September 2025

What does the course cover?

The course is divided into three key areas: electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and fabrication & welding.

Electrical Engineering
You will gain hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge in:

  • Safe isolation and lock-off procedures
  • Wiring radial circuits, ring main circuits, motor starters, and lighting circuits
  • Stripping and testing motors
  • Fault finding and troubleshooting
  • Using testing equipment and hand tools

Mechanical Engineering
This section focuses on practical skills and problem-solving, including:

  • Mechanical and hand fitting techniques
  • Using hand tools and power tools
  • Replacing parts in machines
  • Operating lathes for accurate cutting
  • Producing items such as a hammer, with the potential to create more complex tools as you advance
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings

Fabrication & Welding
Develop your fabrication and welding expertise through:

  • Preparing and using semiautomatic MIG, MAG, and flux-cored arc welding equipment
  • Grinding and metal fabrication techniques
  • Welding various materials and components

Assessment

Assessment is continuous throughout the programme and includes:

  • Assignments for each unit
  • Practical assessments to evaluate your skills across the range of tasks covered
When will I attend?

You will be required to attend the Greater Manchester SkillCentre up to three days per week.

Will I receive an allowance?

You will receive an allowance of up to £25 per week. 

What will I achieve?

On successful completion, you will achieve a City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations.

What are the entry requirements?

To apply for this qualification, you must have achieved:

  • GCSE grade 4 or above in maths and English, or
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in maths and English

 

How much does the course cost?

The course is FREE for anyone aged 16-18.
