This hands-on programme covers the basics of woodworking, from using tools and machinery to understanding health and safety practices. Ideal for those with an interest in practical craftsmanship, this qualification offers a solid foundation for future progression on to an apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery.
What is a Study Programmes?
A Study Programme is a course designed for 16-18 year olds who want to progress onto an apprenticeship but don’t feel quite ready. A Study Programme will help you develop essential skills, gain industry-specific knowledge, and become more employable.

This course covers:
- Health, safety and welfare in construction
- Principles of building construction, information and communication
You will learn how to:
- carry out first fix flooring and roofing
- carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs
- carry out second fixing operations
- carry out carpentry maintenance
- set up and operate a circular saw
You will be required to attend the Greater Manchester SkillCentre up to three days per week.
Additional attendance will be required if you have not yet passed your maths and/or English.
Yes, you will receive an allowance of up to £25 per week.
On successful completion, you will achieve a City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery.
To apply for this qualification, you must have achieved:
- GCSE grade 2 or above in maths and English, or
- Functional Skills Level 1 in maths and English
The course is FREE for anyone aged 16-18.
