GC Education and Skills are working in partnership with Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service (GMFRS) to help you develop the key skills needed to increase your employability chances and gain an appreciation of the GMFRS recruitment process.

What does the Employability course cover?

On this course you will develop the following skills:

  • Planning for progression and making applications
  • Interview skills
  • Time management
  • Presentation skills
  • Developing digital career skills
  • Digital security
  • Explore and understand the importance of equality and diversity
  • Dealing with challenges
  • Introduction to sustainable development and global citizenship

On successful completion, you will achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Principles for Digital Skills in Employment awarded by TQUK 
  • Level 2 in Employability awarded by City & Guilds

 

What do the English and Maths Courses cover?

Functional Skills Maths Level 1 and 2

Topics covered include:

  • Use of numbers and the number system
  • Use of common measures, shapes and space
  • Handling information and data
  • Solving mathematical problems and decision making

 

Functional Skills English Level 1 and 2

Functional English is split into the following areas:

 

  • Speaking - Listening and Communicating - this will include extended narratives and information (information may be on technical, concrete, or abstract topics), discussions, detailed explanations and presentations, all at varying lengths.
  • Reading - This should include a range of straightforward and complex texts on a range of topics and of varying lengths that instruct, describe, explain, and persuade
  • Writing – Text: this will include straightforward and complex texts such as articles, narratives, explanations and reports of varying lengths. Spelling, punctuation and grammar and writing composition 

On successful completion, you will achieve a Functional Skills qualification.

Achieving a Functional Skills Maths and/or English qualification at Level 2 will demonstrate your ability and competence in numeracy and literacy and are considered equivalent to a GCSE C/4 or above.

 

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements however, you will need:

  • A live internet connection via WIFI, any 3G or 4G network
  • A modern internet browser such as Chrome, Safari, or Firefox. If using Internet Explorer, we always recommend using the latest version
  • A desktop PC, Laptop, or any Android or iOS compatible mobile device
  • Possess a solid knowledge of the English language
  • Basic computer skills: e.g. Word processing, emailing, uploading documents, etc.
  • Have a genuine desire to succeed
