Level 3 Air Source Heat Pump Installation

Air source heat pumps are devices that either use the heat of the earth or compressed air to heat buildings.

This course is primarily aimed at qualified Plumbers or new entrants to the market such as apprentices.

This five-day qualification is aimed at experienced tradespersons who hold qualifications in plumbing or electrical installation.

A good understanding of construction principles is required along with a good level of maths and English, even though these are not mandatory requirements.

Air Source Heat Pumps are one of many new green technologies that are beginning to address the drive towards carbon neutrality. We require a new skilled work force that has the ability to install a range of branded equipment across the GMCA and wider. This qualification will act as an additional bolt on qualification that supports the existing skills of the individuals who desire to retrain and up skill in this area.

What does the course cover?

This course covers:

  • How a Heat pump works – principles and components
  • Insulation, heat losses and the effect of heating system design
  • Domestic hot water, buffer tanks and solar coils
  • Ground heat exchangers
  • Health and safety
  • Heat pump installation
  • Maintenance and fault finding
What are the entry requirements?

Applicants should have a minimum of at least one of the below qualifications or equivalent earlier certification:

  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • Heating installers with minimum 3 years of experience installing wet central heating systems, evidenced either by manufacturer courses certification or Gas Safe Register, OFTEC, MCS or HETAS registration
  • MUST have Water Regulations/Water Byelaws
